7 Things I’m Into Right Now
1. What I’m reading
Reflecting on My Failure To Build a Billion-Dollar Company
I love this article because it gives you a rare look into how the traditional billion-or-bust mentality for venture-backed startups can really screw up a good business. Raising venture capital is like adding rocket fuel to your business, and for most businesses this a) isn’t warranted b) creates the wrong incentives and c) even if it is successful means that the founders don’t make enough personal money when the ultimate business is sold.
2. What I’m listening to
Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records by Jan Jelinek
Apple Music/ Spotify
This week I’m listening to German electronic musician Jan Jelinek. He produces a wide variety of works based on manipulated samples, arching from glitchy minimal techno to electro-acoustic drones to radio plays. Hope this album helps you focus more.
3. A question I answered
Can a CEO be on the board of directors?
In nearly all companies, the CEO, holds a seat on the board of directors. More often than not, the CEO is actually the chairman of the board. In this answer, I discuss the internal corporate structure and why the CEO more often than not, holds a seat on the Board of Directors.
4. An app I’m using
Focus is a time manager that helps you beat procrastination and work more efficiently using the Pomodoro Technique. It helps me work in intervals and reminds me to take regular breaks. Taking breaks enables you to reenergize and concentrate better, be more thoughtful, and ultimately, work more productively.
5. A quote I’m thinking about
““The pure present is an ungraspable advance of the past devouring the future. In truth, all sensation is already memory” — Henri Bergson
6. What I’m watching
Just Run | Derek Sivers of Successful Simplicity
A creative video—under 2 minutes long—on how to make the hard stuff easier.
7. What I’m wearing
They’re built to last, you can wear them with anything, and minimalistic. New York-based Common Projects knows how to combine utilitarian design with Italian quality and construction. This is probably my favorite sneaker of all time.
